Who Is Your Current Mentor?

If you’re not currently being mentored through the maze of clinical practice, the business of dentistry, managing current and future continuing education, and the demands that go along with being a successful dental professional, that’s impressive. Many dentist don’t learn about KPIs, what they are or why we care, and what impact they have over the course of your career and dental practice.
These “Key Performance Indicators” are how we measure our success at implementing the systems conducive to healthy patients, a healthy business, and highlight areas in need of our attention.

I would encourage each dentist to evaluate who is walking them through the emotional, professional, and financial perils that come with being a dentist in today’s market. If it’s hard to answer this question, consider joining the Professional Dental Mentors network.

From Core Beliefs to Raving Fans

Building Trust and Success in Dentistry

Some of us stumbled into a mentor/mentee opportunity straight out of dental school, just like I did, and were taught how to take incredible care of patients by committing to three core beliefs:
Give a painless injection
Treat people fairly
Only provide dental restorations you are proud of
It was those three principles that led to being a great dentist, but it was the work behind the scenes that fascinated me the most. I couldn’t believe there was so much extra STUFF you had to know beyond doing the dentistry!
Just because someone agrees the treatment is the right one, how do you get them to do the work and pay the money? Why are some dentists that do mediocre work seen as “successful” and the great ones are struggling to make ends meet? There was more to being successful than I ever realized and it involved the nasty four-letter word.
You guessed it…… “Sell.” Luckily, I realized later it wasn’t as much selling as it was that you needed to be liked and trusted and those were things I could do. One of the core tenets used for increasing treatment acceptance is taking on the role of trusted advisor. We must focus on the first word of the title before we can ever reach the second.
How are you building trust with your patients? Have you been in one location for a long time or do you have lists of Raving Fans instead? If you aren’t familiar with the book by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles, read Raving Fans and see examples of successful businesses. It’s an easy read, funny and how often do books about an old guy being a fairy godmother get recommended?
Once you’ve become adept at getting Raving Fans, then we need to facilitate trust and that’s dependent upon good patient communication.
What we do

Spoiler Alert!

I did NOT invent the wheel. Interestingly, the invention of the wheel changed the future of the world forever. There are no wheels that exist in nature and by itself, a wheel isn’t much use to you. However, when the hole in the center of a wheel is attached to a stable framework, a wheel becomes one of the most significant inventions in all of humanity. Some of us were taught how to make a great wheel straight out of dental school. We were all taught a little bit about the wheel and how it works while in school, and every day since then, we’ve been refining it. In fact, I had a mentor that taught me how to make a fantastic wheel. All I had to do was take a great invention and put some signature touches on it to make it my own.
Now I’ve got this wheel, so refined now that when I describe it to others, they have trouble believing it’s existence. I can now show others how to build one so that they can move from point A to point B with increased efficiency, predictability and a more secure future. Why go to the trouble of reinventing what has already been created?

Why You Should Sign Up for Mentorship

Increasing your productivity early in your career can have a profound impact on your financial future.
You can learn the skills of a seasoned clinician without the travel and expense of an immersive continuing education program. Too often, dentists come home and struggle to implement the new skills into an existing office and team. That’s where a good mentor is invaluable as you put your new systems to work and avoid the pitfalls of inexperience. “See one, do one, teach one” is our mantra as you place implants in our teaching facility and then we come to your office for more over-the-shoulder guidance on whichever technique you care to improve. Whether it’s a single posterior or a full arch of immediately placed, immediately loaded implants, we will help you every step of the way.
Community Engagement and Brand Identity

Becoming Your Patient’s Trusted Advisor

There are specific techniques that help patients connect with you and allow you to connect with them. These skills can be taught. It’s all about reducing tension, building trust, and fostering understanding, which then opens the door to forming lasting relationships. This is the first step toward taking on the coveted role of a trusted advisor.
Get involved in your community—make your name as familiar to local neighborhoods as possible. Join organizations like Kiwanis, Lion’s Club, or any group that allows you to give back to the community that supports your practice. Differentiate your office by creating a brand with a clear, unique focus and nurture that through multiple channels.
What Mentorship Provides

Unlocking Your Financial Potential

Focusing on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and utilizing clinical tools to consistently produce upwards of $1,500 an hour has a lasting impact on your personal life-granting you the freedom that comes from reducing time at work while maintaining profitability. This isn’t coaching or advising; it’s about shaping you into the highly productive and skilled clinician you’re meant to be.
The Limits of Average Production
A personal production rate of the national average-around $400 per hour- translates to approximately $3,200 per day or $576,000 annually if you’re working four days a week for 45 weeks a year. At this level, it can be challenging to afford top-tier clinical continuing education developed by key opinion leaders from around the world.
The Impact of a $100 Per Hour Increase
By simply improving efficiency and expanding your treatment planning options, you can achieve a modest $100 per hour increase in production. This small change results in an additional $144,000 in yearly revenue.
The Power of a $300 Per Hour Increase
Raising your production by $300 an hour requires a coordinated effort in scheduling, team training, and clinical expertise to support a diverse range of services. Clinicians who personally produce $700 per hour can generate over $1 million annually.
